REGISTRATION: To register for a trip, visit the registration tab at the top of your screen. Just select your trip, pay the deposit or full amount, and then complete the health forms and waivers.

DEPOSIT: Each trip has a $40 deposit that contributes to the full cost. The deposit is non-refundable. If you wish to pay only the deposit at registration, please write a check for the remaining amount to Alta Trails; mail it ahead of time or bring it with you to the first day of your trip.

COST: Each 2-night trip costs $200 and 3-night trips are $300. These fees go towards covering the costs of gear maintenance, food, transportation, and scholarships. As of now, all money earned through Alta Trails is going straight back into the company with the goal of creating more affordable backpacking opportunities for women of all backgrounds.

HEALTH FORMS/WAIVER: All forms can be found under registration tab on a page called “Forms/Waivers.” Please submit all completed forms ONE WEEK prior to departure via email to

PACKING: Upon registration, you will receive a detailed packing list. Basically, if you don’t have a gear item, we will lend it to you. Just make sure you have comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and good walking shoes. When you show up for your trip, a staffer will go through your pack with you to make sure you have all the essentials and not too much extra weight.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The primary physical necessities are that you can walk on uneven surfaces, carry a light/medium-weight pack, and get down and up from the floor. Additionally, we will be without electricity for 2-nights. Our oldest participant so far was in her seventies, and she completed the entire trip alongside 25 year olds and 55 year olds.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE OF ANY KIND IS REQUIRED!!! We will teach you absolutely everything you need to know. Our trips are designed to introduce women and girls to backpacking. The goal is not to overwhelm you, so the distances are manageable and paces are relaxed. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! I will do everything possible to make it a positive experience and help you accomplish something new!

STAFF: The leaders of each trip are adult women who are experienced backpackers. At least one staffer on every trip is certified in Wilderness First-Aid, and all are certified in First-Aid & CPR for adults and youth. Our staffers are responsible, energetic, goofy, and probably a little smelly. We LOVE leading trips, and we hope you’ll join us in our love of backpacking! If you’re interested in becoming a staffer, please email Emma at with a short message about your interests and experience, and we’ll set up a time to talk!

DROP OFF/PICK UP: Depending on the trip, we will gather in Arlington, VA, Richmond VA, or Durham, NC. From there the group will head west to the mountains for a weekend of exploring. Usually drop-off is Friday afternoon, and pick-up is Sunday afternoon. The exact times depend on the specific trip.
